A Trip Along the Mekong

Just finished an amazing two day boat trip down the Mekong River in Laos. It was incredibly peaceful passing the sandy beaches and grazing animals that dot the jungle coast. We spent the night in the Hilltribe of Pak Beng where the people graciously opened their homes and showed us their self-sustaining existence.

We spent much if the late afternoon playing games with the local kids of the 500 person village. I then settled my things into the chief’s house where I’d be spending the night. The houses there are on stilts both for ventilation and so that the people – who believe in animism – will be closer to good spirits. Our guide supplemented our dinner with fresh chicken that we watched him kill and cook over a fire. We then all retired down to the beach to gaze at the stars and drink rice wine from straws dug deep in a jar of fermented rice.

We departed early this morning for another peaceful journey down to the Thai border. Laos was even more than I could have imagined – sad to leave it behind.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
