Boating Around Halong Bay

We took a boat ride today through Halong Bay. The weather was a bit overcast, but I think it made all the limestone cliffs that much more dramatic. Or maybe it was the wine at lunch on the boat πŸ™‚ I know it definitely helped my kayaking skills as we set off from the boat to explore a local fishing village settled along one of the thousands of limestone islands in the bay.

We then pulled into an insanely busy port to see the Heavenly Palace Caves. They were truly stunning and only recently discovered by fisherman in 1993 — though I wish they’d just left them with natural light rather than the bright colored lights they’ve used. I suppose I should have put that suggestion in the “Ideas Box.” Either that or that the port could really use a traffic cop — we witnessed three collisions and many more close calls as the tourist boats bobbed and weaved to get close to the caves.

All in all, it was a beautiful day in one of Vietnam’s most iconic locations.
